New Mexico`s deer numbers are stable, and for hunters looking to add one to their trophy room, there are good public land options in the Burro Mountains of Units 23 and 27. For occasional areas with high deer density, do not neglect units 2B, 16, 21, 24, 26, 30, 31, 32, 34, 36 or 37. Of these, 21 could be considered the heaviest sleepers. In general, success rates in most of these areas hover around 30% in most years, but are sometimes higher. For areas where silver is higher, it`s hard to beat units 2C, 4, 5B, 6A, 6C, 31, 33, and 45. Of course, it usually takes longer (more points) for these to be drawn. January bowhunts catch the back end of the rut and deer focus on their respective winter areas. There are always one or two large males in the northwestern part of the state during the September archery season, although there is usually a lot of time invested in scouting and hunting to connect with these resident males. During this season, any athletic arm loaded through the muzzle is allowed. Only black powder or its substitutes may be used; Smokeless powder is not allowed. You can use riflescopes and similar aids. You can also use bows and crossbows as long as they are legal. New Mexico also offers good opportunities for hunting deer. The best goats are usually collected from the Burro Mountains region of Unit 23 as well as Unit 27. There are always some 10011+ dollars per year on these hunts. Unit 23 outside the Burro Mountains and Unit 24 have pockets with good deer populations and can be a good hunt for those willing to hunt hard and spend time in the field. The best hunting dates for rutting activities are the bow hunts at the end of the season in January. Muzzle-loading hunts on all four units have good draw rates and take place before rifle and archery hunting on each unit.
New Mexico has good mule deer populations in most of the state and offers a variety of different terrains in which they can be hunted. New Mexico is a much better laid-back state than a trophy state when it comes to deer hunting. The northwest corner of the state is the exception, and there are some units where it is possible to harvest a trophy mule deer. Units 2B, 2C, 5B and 7 are the only regular producers of class 170-18011 males and still have the potential to find a giant deer. The tags in these units offer long-term drawable opportunities, as most non-resident applicants ask for the limited number of tokens issued during these hunts. If you can beat the odds of pulling one of these tags, consider hiring an outfitter to get the most out of your hunt. Here are some of the common legal weapons available during certain seasons. Muzzle chargers can have riflescopes of any power, have hooves, belt balls and in-line ignition.
Fighters are limited to .45 gauge muzzle magazines and larger muzzle magazines. There are seasons of “restricted mouth loading” when this equipment is not legal. Archery sights on arches are not allowed to project light, but bright enclosures are acceptable. Arrows should have wide heads with sharp edges. This season does not allow modern firearms, but they allow almost everything else. All weapons must be “legal” and comply with the regulations associated with those weapons. Customers can obtain a duplicate label in person from any NMDGF licence provider or office. There is a $6 fee for duplicate licenses/labels. If a duplicate label is obtained, the original tag number becomes invalid and the license must be reprinted. New Mexico offers several hunts exclusively to hunters with reduced mobility (MI). Many of these exclusive MI hunts have excellent hunting dates.
To be eligible for this program, the applicant`s physician must sign and certify that the restricted mobility conditions apply. The MI licence holder may use a crossbow during archery season and fire from a stationary vehicle that is not on an established road or highway. If a legal wildlife is clearly injured, the MI hunter may also be assisted by another person to pursue, recover and/or kill the animal. The wolf population in New Mexico has continued to rise. The latest survey found that there are 186 Mexican gray wolves in the wild in the mountain ranges of southern New Mexico and Arizona. This represents a 24% increase in population since last year`s census. This population has doubled in the last five years. At first glance, these wolves appear to look like larger coyotes.
Be careful and know what you are shooting at as they are currently under federal protection. Illegally shooting a wolf in New Mexico carries a one-year prison sentence and a $50,000 fine. I read the NM Game and Fish Regs and I can`t find what a legal deer is, I see FAD (Forked Antlered Deer), I haven`t hunted in New Mexico for 4 or 5 years and a deer had 3 points on one side (eye protection counted as a dot). There are many types of legal options for hunting in New Mexico. However, there are not all seasons in all units, which vary greatly by region. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you understand where you are hunting and what regulations have been adopted at this time of year. It doesn`t matter, white-tailed deer or mullet, Bill got it directly from the settlements. As long as it has two different points, it`s legal. This session, usually referred to as “all legal,” allows you to hunt with any legal weapon.
