The trees can be used to hunt deer during all deer hunting seasons. It is illegal to establish or evict a permanent blind on state or state-leased land. Portable tree stands may be used on state or state leased land, U.S. Forest Service lands, and Muscatatuck, Patoka River, and Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge lands. Trees can only be left overnight at noon from September 15 to January 10. It is illegal to use dogs or other pets to take deer. The number must be noted on a temporary transport label and kept with the deer until processing begins. Hunters must register their captured deer within 48 hours of killing. This can be done in three ways: 1 deer with antlers AND the number of antlerless deer per district quota; Exceptions apply to certain characteristics of the MNR Deer may only be captured with a handgun if they comply with MNR regulations and only during firearms season, with muzzle-loading handguns only during the muzzle loading season and in deer reduction areas if and where local regulations permit.
“We are developing a yes or no list of specific cartridges that will be legal and illegal under the new law,” Bloom said. 1 deer of both sexes per military deer hunting licence or refuge Deer reduction areas may be modified annually at the discretion of the MNR Director based on the management needs of the deer population. Please visit deer.dnr.IN.gov to see an up-to-date map and area descriptions. Unless exempted (see Permit Information), a person must have a signed or digital deer hunting license, resident juvenile hunt/trap, lifetime full hunt, or lifetime full hunt/fishing license if hunting deer on public or private land. With the exception of the deer hunting license package, full lifetime hunting license, and resident juvenile hunting/trap license, only one deer can be captured per deer hunting license. See the tables under Deer Seasons, Permits and Equipment for a summary of deer seasons, permits, harvest restrictions and equipment requirements. The new law is set to expire after the 2020 deer season, when the DNR will submit an impact report to the governor and the General Assembly. The deer reduction zone season runs from September 15, 2022 to January 31, 2023.
The catch limit for reduction areas is 10 deer, only one of which may be provided with antlers. People hunting in a designated reduction area and attempting to reach the boundaries of the reduction area must hunt a deer without antlers before killing a deer with antlers (also called “earn a dollar”). The requirement to earn one dollar only applies to the baggage limit of the discount area. The reduction zone boundary is in addition to all other harvest restrictions (see Deer Seasons, Permits and Equipment). NOTE: A separate permit for deer is required before taking each deer (exceptions: deer licence package, juvenile hunting or trap, lifetime licence, landowner exemption). Shotguns, handguns, rifles with legal cartridges, muzzle-loading long guns, muzzle-loading handguns and air rifles are legal during gun season. Only muzzle-loading firearms are legal during muzzle-loading season. Firearms with silencers can be used to catch deer in accordance with federal law. Certain restrictions apply to deer reduction zone permits on MNR-managed properties. Please contact the property you wish to hunt for more information.
The first change is to clarify acceptable cartridges. Bloom says his agency has been inundated with hunters asking about the new law, with most of the questions related to legal calibers. Few people in the state`s deer hunting community seem to know why he introduced this law or who pushed it. One hunter, who asked not to be identified, said the law “just came out of nowhere,” adding: “A lot of people don`t want guns during deer season.” However, Arnold says it was nothing more than the result of conversations with friends and other deer hunters. The deer head must remain attached to the carcass until the deer is registered with CheckIN Game and a confirmation number is assigned. Additional legal cartridges under HEA 1231 include 6mm-06, 6mm BR Remington, 6mm PPC, 6mm Remington, .240 Weatherby, .243 Winchester, .243 Winchester Super Short Magnum, .30 Carbine, .30 Herrett, .30 Remington AR, .30-06 Springfield, .30-30 Winchester, .30-40 Krag, .300 AAC Blackout (.300 Whisper), .300 H&H Magnum, .300 Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum, .300 Savage, .300 Weatherby Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, .300 Winchester Short Magnum, .300 Remington Ultra Magnum, .308 Marlin, .308 Winchester, 7.62x39mm and 7.62x54mmR. “We`re not increasing the season and we`re not increasing the number of deer you can take. A rifle is just another tool. MNR will do a good job of monitoring the impact and making changes as needed,” Arnold said. From November 12, 2022 to November 31, 2022.
January 2023, hunters must follow the orange hunter dress code to hunt deer with a gun in a reduction zone. Hunters must obtain permission from landowners to hunt on private property. 1 antlerless deer per permit so as not to exceed the bonus quota for the antlerless county; Hunters are allowed to carry more than one type of legal firearm if they only hunt during gun zones, juveniles, and reduction zones (in areas where local ordinances allow the use of a firearm). INDIANAPOLIS — A new law in Indiana has allowed more types of rifle cartridges to be used on private land during gun season. • A hunter must not possess more than 10 of these cartridges when hunting deer Immediately after killing a deer, the hunter must complete a temporary paper tag indicating the name, address, sex of the deer, licence number (if applicable) of the person who caught the deer and the day and month of killing. A hunter is not obliged to put the tag on the deer while pulling it out of the field, as long as the hunter has completed and carries the required information with him. A hunter must immediately take charge of the deer carcass and maintain visual contact with it, unless the completed interim transport label is appropriate. The tag must be attached to the deer before the hunter leaves the deer. Using infrared sensors or electronic calls from deer to find or take deer with you is illegal. It is also illegal to hunt or retrieve deer using an infrared sensor, or to hunt deer while possessing an electronic call from the deer. New legal cartridges include the .243 Winchester, .30-30 Winchester, .300 AAC Blackout and .30-06 Springfield. “It didn`t make sense for us to be limited to one shotgun during deer season, but the day after the season ends, we can take a rifle and hunt coyotes and other game,” says Arnold, an avid deer hunter.
“There were no special interest groups calling for it, and no insurance company lobbied me for this bill. It was just one of those things that had been part of the discussion for a long time. To the extent permitted by local regulations, legal deer hunting archery equipment may be used in reduction zones from September 15, 2022 to January 31, 2023. Some hunters fear the addition of rifles will further reduce the state`s deer herd. Hunters must ensure that deer caught in a deer reduction area are registered correctly. MNR uses these reactions and corresponding harvest figures to determine the effectiveness of these areas. In counties with a deer reduction zone, hunters must indicate in CheckIN Game if the deer was harvested in a deer reduction zone. If this is the case, hunters must indicate whether they want these deer to be considered within the deer reduction zone. Hunters using reduction zones to harvest a second male or to reach the deer reduction zone must ensure that their deer count within the catch limit of the zone.
Hunters who hunt in an area within the deer reduction zone, but who are not interested in counting deer within the zone`s bag limit, or who do not use a valid permit in a deer reduction zone, should choose not to count deer within the exclusion zone. According to a DNR press release, officials received several questions about the legislation, particularly regarding calibers and cartridges. • Rifles with a barrel of less than 18″ are NOT considered handguns Rifles with pistol cartridges, which were allowed in previous years, can still be used to hunt deer on private and public lands.
