Good Law Enforcement Books

These first-person memoirs trace the often difficult journey of Leroy Stover, the first black law enforcement officer in Birmingham, Alabama. You`ll shake your head in disbelief as you read the treatment Stover received during his first days and weeks in the troops. The following is a list of some of my favorites. In most cases, I have read these books several times and use many of them as office references when writing about policing, preparing for interviews with officers, and/or a variety of other job-related duties. No book is more important to the well-being of police officers than Kevin Gilmartin`s Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement. The erratic nature of policing sends officers on a daily “roller coaster of hypervigilance.” Officers must master the ability to make good decisions in car chases and shootings, just as they must be able to help people going through mental health crises. Society demands that police officers be able to deter people from leaving the ledge and then responding to emergencies where they have to risk their lives. The psychological toll can be immense.
