Each week, I called a member of Allen and Overy to discuss issues related to the law and clarify the advice I should give to the client. I was also a fantastic opportunity to network as we talked informally about the law in general and how they started their “legal career” and what advice they could offer. The partnership that has been formed benefits both the student volunteers and, ultimately, the client, as the client receives consistent legal advice from an expert in the field of labour law. The Law Center offers you the attention that you unfortunately cannot get in a conference. This gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained from the conferences to consulting clients. It also allows you to experience a law firm during a working day.
As a volunteer, you will learn important privacy and customer service issues. It is very difficult to refer to these basic principles in a conference. Free legal advice and representation in the areas of community care, discrimination, employment, family, housing, immigration and asylum, money and debt, public law and social benefits. Lawyers from the pro bono department are on call during the clinic sessions on Wednesday afternoons to work exclusively with our students and Coventry University. I thought this would be the best opportunity for me to gain insight into and put it into practice, challenge myself and learn more. Before I even started at the clinic, the application process itself certainly helped me! I learned different techniques on how to write applications and resumes, what questions usually come up during an interview and how to effectively answer those questions to sell myself in the best possible way. Our students participate in everything the lawyers at the Law Center do, with supervisors currently working in practice and experts in specific areas of law. They gain hands-on experience with reserved legal activities and so far offer supervised advice and support to over 500 residents. How does working in a practicing legal clinic compare to conferences and seminars and how do you feel? This event will involve the Business and Law Enterprise Clicni (BUSLEC), where students develop their legal skills by providing advice on business issues to budding entrepreneurs, charities and social enterprises in the Coventry area. We employ lawyers and paralegals and we have legal aid contracts so we can represent you in court or tribunal if you have a low income – and our service is free for anyone living or working in Coventry. I was excited and eager to get started, I was aware of the importance of practical legal work experience and I wanted to get an idea of how the law works in practice.
The opportunity at the Law Centre gave me the kind of work that a lawyer does on a daily basis. I made sure to research the Law Centre so that I could strengthen my application and show my passion for being part of the legal clinic. The clinic`s goal is to provide hands-on legal experience by integrating our students into an office environment and working with clients alongside trained lawyers and lawyers. The event is aimed at start-ups, small businesses and entrepreneurs who do not have as much experience. Participants gain confidence in the legality of running small businesses and developing additional skills outside of their basic business orientation. From student lectures to legal advice, the clinic offers exciting work experiences every Wednesday that are valuable to all students studying a law degree. I could describe helping the local community in two words: happiness and contentment! Session 1 (10:00 – 12:30) focuses on the problems that small businesses may encounter and the clues to consider. Working at the Law Center rather than in an amphitheater reminds you that you are definitely in the big world to overcome challenges and find solutions to problems. In college, I usually learn the theoretical side of law, but working at the legal clinic means providing service to clients. It is fascinating to see how lawyers think and how they apply the law according to the client`s situation. It is an opportunity for students to gain great experience to advance their studies with postgraduate studies and apply for work experience and holiday programs. Typically, a typical day would involve interviewing clients on a variety of employment law issues. I made sure to follow the procedure of the legal centre; Compliance with privacy principles.
After identifying the relevant information from the client, I followed some useful tips for the client on the next steps to follow. I was also aware of the time available to customers to process their complaint if they wished. Working with Allen & Overy is amazing! I think I`m fortunate to be able to get involved with the Law Centre at the time when they were building a “pro bono partnership” with Allen & Overy. Many students could only dream of having the opportunity to learn from such a company. At the end of the interview, the customer`s satisfaction and gratitude is a sign that they are grateful for the help and support you have given them.
